Its title, *Apoyo incondicional al gobierno del Frente Popular* ("Unconditional support for the Popular Front government"), places it squarely in Spain's political struggle of 1936. The Popular Front, a coalition of left-leaning parties, won the national elections in February of that year, and within months a military uprising against the Republic had plunged the country into civil war. The Ministry of Public Instruction in Madrid issued posters like this one to rally support for the elected government, and hands are its central subject, a common symbol of collective effort in Republican propaganda of the period.
