Few posters of the Spanish Civil War state their stakes as plainly as this one, which pairs the names of Velázquez, El Greco and Goya with the claim that their work is "booty of international fascism" that the Republic defends. Printed in Madrid between 1936 and 1939, while the government was fighting the Nationalist uprising that began in July 1936, it presents the nation's painting as a cause worth rallying behind. The Prado's masterpieces were in fact crated and moved out of Madrid during the war to protect them, which gave the message a concrete basis.
