This view shows the Blackwell's Island Bridge, a crossing over the East River tied to the island that lay between Manhattan and Queens. The photograph dates from about 1908 to 1910, just as the nearby Queensboro Bridge was rising over the same waters. The island was then home to a cluster of public institutions, including a penitentiary, almshouse, and hospitals, and it was renamed Welfare Island in 1921. The Detroit Publishing Company made the glass negative, and its large-format views of American cities are valued today as records of the built environment before the mid-century.
