A tree-lined avenue leads toward a grotto on the grounds of Spring Hill College, the Jesuit school on the western edge of Mobile, Alabama. Founded in 1830, the college is among the oldest Catholic institutions of higher learning in the South, and its wooded campus was known for landscaped paths and shrines. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded American towns, scenery and landmarks in the years before 1915. The view shows how a college campus was arranged and presented to visitors in the early twentieth century.
