Government Street was one of the main east-west thoroughfares of Mobile, Alabama, a port city on Mobile Bay, and this view looks down its length toward the east. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, the kind of large-format plate that Detroit Publishing Company photographers used to make views of towns and scenery between about 1900 and 1915. The company sold its images widely, often as hand-colored prints, so many of its surviving negatives show how American cities looked to tourists and buyers of the period. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
