The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception stands in downtown Mobile, the port city on Alabama's Gulf Coast that was founded by the French in 1702 and later became a center of Catholic life in the region. This glass negative, about 8 by 10 inches, was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American towns, landmarks, and scenery in the years around 1900 to 1915. The building's Gothic Revival design, built in the decades before the Civil War, reflects the mid-nineteenth-century church architecture that many Southern dioceses adopted.
