The stern-wheel river packet *Jas. T. Staples* is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, made at Mobile, Alabama, where the Mobile, Tombigbee and Alabama rivers meet before reaching the bay. Packets like this one carried freight and passengers along the rivers of the Gulf region in the early 1900s, when rail lines were still expanding and waterways remained essential for moving cotton, lumber and goods. The negative belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, rivers and transportation between about 1890 and 1915, so the plate captures the working waterfront of that era.
