Spring Hill College, a Jesuit institution on the hills northwest of Mobile, is the subject here, and this glass negative captures its main building in the years before 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, which traveled widely photographing American towns, scenery and institutions for color and black-and-white postcards and views, produced many such records of schools and civic landmarks around the turn of the twentieth century. Spring Hill traces its roots to 1830, making it the oldest Catholic college in the South, and its campus was a point of pride for the city. The large-format 8 x 10 negative preserves fine architectural detail that smaller film could not.
