This 8 by 10 inch glass negative records Spring Hill College, the Jesuit school on the high ground west of downtown Mobile, Alabama. Founded in 1830, it is one of the oldest Catholic colleges in the South, and its campus was a fixture of the city's educational life long before this view was made. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely between about 1890 and 1920 documenting American towns, buildings and landscapes. Its dry plate format preserves the fine detail of the buildings and grounds as they looked around the turn of the twentieth century.
