The terminal at Union Station in Mobile, Alabama, was built to serve several railroad lines from one building, a common arrangement in the early 1900s, when rail travel shaped how Southern port cities connected to the rest of the country. This view was taken around 1909 on an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sent crews across the United States to document towns, depots, and streets for promotion and sale. Large glass negatives like this one recorded fine detail in architecture, signage, and the crowds and carriages that gathered at the station.
