The Bienville Hotel took its name from Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, sieur de Bienville, the French colonial officer who founded Mobile in 1702. This c1906 view comes from a glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American cities, resorts, and landmarks in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Its large 8 by 10 inch plate gives plenty of detail on the building's facade and street setting. The negative also carries a Detroit Publishing number and handwritten markings, which help trace how the image was catalogued and passed on.
