The Hotel Bienville was named for Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the French colonial officer who founded Mobile in 1702, and this glass negative records the building as it stood in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sent photographers across the United States between about 1900 and 1915, produced the view. Its large 8 by 10 inch format captures architectural detail and street-level context that smaller prints often lose. The negative's catalog number and its 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado show how such plates moved between collections over time.
