Joseph Binder's 1957 Navy recruiting poster sells the service with a single phrase, "Join modern mobile mighty Navy," and its subject is the aircraft carrier, the floating airfield at the center of postwar naval power. Printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office, the halftone color poster reflects the late 1950s Cold War push to recruit young men into a fleet that was rapidly adopting jet aircraft and new ship designs. Binder, an Austrian-born designer known for his bold graphic style, used simplified forms and strong color to make the ship look sleek and up to date, presenting service as a modern career.
