Farragut is shown lashed to the rigging of his flagship, the *Hartford*, as the squadron steams past the Confederate forts guarding Mobile Bay in August 1864. The rigging detail records a well-known image of the admiral's determination, since he had himself tied to the shrouds to keep his footing and see over the smoke during the fight. Louis Prang produced this color lithograph in Boston around 1870 or 1871, working from a painting by Theodore Kaufman. Prang's chromos were among the first mass-produced American color prints, and this one shows how the publisher used the Civil War naval victory to appeal to a postwar public.
