The small pen-and-Chinese-white drawing on brown paper shows the Confederate ironclad ram *Tennessee* in the aftermath of its surrender in Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864. The ship was the most powerful Confederate vessel defending the bay, and its armor and iron ram were meant to break the Union blockade. Instead, it was battered by Union warships under Admiral David Farragut and finally forced to surrender, a loss that helped seal the fall of Mobile as a Gulf port.
