Few Confederate figures received a monument as prominent as this one of Raphael Semmes, the naval officer who commanded the raider CSS *Alabama* during the Civil War. Semmes, born in Maryland in 1809, spent his last years in Mobile, where he died in 1877, and the statue honors his service there. This glass negative, made around 1906, comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced travel views and postcards of American towns and landmarks. Its many monument photographs show how Southern cities memorialized the war in the early twentieth century.
