Pickers and packers at work among the orange trees near Los Angeles are the subject of this stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope. Citrus was one of the region's defining crops in the 1900s, when groves spread across the Los Angeles area and fruit was shipped east by rail. The card was issued by the Ingersoll View Company of St. Paul, Minnesota, a firm that sold stereo views to households far from California, letting viewers see a working orchard without leaving home. The scene is worth studying for its handling of the fruit from tree to crate, which shows how much hand labor went into getting oranges ready for market.
