Nine Liberty ships sit side by side at the outfitting docks of the California Shipbuilding Corporation in Los Angeles, close to delivery to the U.S. Maritime Commission when this Acme photograph was taken in early December 1943. Liberty ships were mass-produced cargo vessels built in large numbers during the Second World War, and the Los Angeles yards were among the many West Coast facilities that turned out hulls at a pace unthinkable before the war. The picture shows the wartime industrial effort in Los Angeles at its height, when shipbuilding had become one of the city's largest employers and the harbor was busy with new construction.
