Broadway at 8th Street is one of the few views in this set that pins down a specific Los Angeles intersection rather than a general street scene. Around 1920, Broadway was the core of the city's downtown retail and theater district, and by then automobiles had begun crowding out the streetcars and horse-drawn traffic that had dominated the street a decade earlier. The Wittemann Collection, from which this print comes, is a group of commercial photographs made by a studio that documented the city's changing streetscapes in the 1910s and early 1920s. Look closely at the cars parked along the curb and the storefront signage, which together show how quickly the downtown core was adapting to motor traffic.
