The church shown here is St. Paul's in Buffalo, New York, a stone house of worship that the Detroit Publishing Company photographed in a street view, with the cathedral facade and its neighboring buildings in the frame. The company, based in Detroit, sent photographers across the country around the turn of the twentieth century to document cities, landmarks, and everyday streetscapes, and its work was often sold as postcards and travel prints. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative, catalogued with an approximate date of 1904, preserves how a prominent Buffalo church and its streetscape looked during the city's period of rapid growth as a manufacturing and rail hub.
