A quiet lake in one of Buffalo's parks is the subject here, shown as a place of calm rather than the city's streets or factories. Buffalo's park system was largely laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the 1870s, giving residents green retreats from a fast-growing industrial city. The image is an 8-by-10-inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose views of American places were widely sold to railroads and publishers in the early 1900s. It was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 and later reached the Library of Congress.
