Few scenes from early Yellowstone show the animals this closely, with the herd grazing in tall grass rather than seen at a distance. By about 1907, the American bison had been driven to the edge of extinction by market hunting in the 1800s. Yellowstone, established as the nation's first national park in 1872, had become one of the last places where a protected herd could survive, and photographs like this one helped the public see the animals that conservationists were working to save.
