This lithograph shows the moment riders close in on an entire herd of bison, as the title, *The Buffalo Hunt: Surrounding the Herd*, makes clear. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for popular views of American life, issued many scenes of the Plains that brought the West to buyers who had never seen it. The print was made in the decades when bison herds, once numbering in the tens of millions, were being rapidly reduced by commercial hunting and the spread of railroads. Images like this one came to stand for a frontier that was disappearing.
