This 1848 lithograph uses the city's name for its joke, with Buffalo, New York, serving as the setting for a political hunt among presidential hopefuls. The Free Soil Party held its founding convention in Buffalo that August and nominated Martin Van Buren, who appears among the names here alongside Lewis Cass and Zachary Taylor. The party opposed extending slavery into the western territories, the goal of the Wilmot Proviso, and the print reflects that contest. Publisher H.R. Robinson issued it in New York that year, and it is probably drawn by a artist identified only as W.J.C.
