Two men who were both famous in 1885 meet in this portrait: Buffalo Bill Cody, the scout and showman, and Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa Lakota leader who had led resistance at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. The picture was taken at the William Notman studio in Montreal in August 1885, while Cody's Wild West show was touring Canada, and Sitting Bull had joined the troupe that season. The print was later copyrighted by D.F. Barry in June 1897, more than a decade after the sitting, which accounts for the later date in its record.
