The caption card for this c1886 print links it to Buffalo Bill's Wild West, the traveling show William F. Cody built from frontier riding, marksmanship, and staged scenes of the American West, and credits the photographer as Sarony, probably the New York studio of Napoleon Sarony, known for theatrical portraits. Its subject tracings list "Indians" and "Circus" entries, which fits a show that featured Native performers alongside cowboys and sharpshooters, though the card itself is old and unverified. Cody's company toured American cities through the 1880s before going overseas, and its posters and photographs helped shape popular images of the frontier. The record does not say where or when this particular picture was taken.
