The poster's headline names "Col. W.F. Cody" under the show's title, Buffalo Bills Wild West, and the record credits "Puck" and P.F. Ritchie as its makers. Cody, known as Buffalo Bill (1846-1917), built his traveling show into one of the most famous entertainments of the late 1800s, mixing horsemanship, marksmanship and staged scenes of frontier life. Its posters were designed to be eye-catching in towns the show was about to reach, and this 1890 color sheet was made for a British audience, where the show drew large crowds. Its bold lettering and vivid color show how mass-market color lithography was used to sell spectacle.
