Few images from the early railroad era show the bison hunt as directly as this wood engraving, which depicts passengers and hunters firing from the line of the Kansas Pacific Railroad. Published in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper on June 3, 1871, it reflects the period when railroad companies advertised the Plains as a destination for sport, and when the railroad's passage across the grasslands was rapidly reducing the great herds. The engraving was made for a mass-circulation weekly, so its scene of hunters taking aim from a moving train reached a broad readership eager to read about the frontier.
