Few pictures show the moment the two lines met as directly as this one, with the locomotives of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific facing each other and their engineers clasping hands. The meeting took place at Promontory Summit in the Utah Territory in May 1869, joining the rails of the first transcontinental railroad across the United States. The record credits the photographers Savage & Ottinger, of Salt Lake City, and identifies the print as a wood engraving of the scene. Engravings like this carried the event to readers across the country who would never see the remote site.
