The southern shore of Donner Lake, seen here in evening light, is what sets this view apart from other scenes on the board. The lake takes its name from the Donner Party, whose emigrants were snowbound in the surrounding mountains during the winter of 1846 and 1847. When this stereograph was published in 1866, the Central Pacific Railroad was building its line east over the Sierra Nevada, and the lake lay close to that route. Only one photograph from the original pair survives, so this print is a single half of a view once meant to be seen in three dimensions.
