Falls on the Yuba River, near Crystal Lake, show the rugged Sierra Nevada country that the Central Pacific Railroad had to cross on its route over Donner Pass. The view is a half of a stereograph, a paired image meant to be seen through a viewer for a three-dimensional effect, and this one is from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, number 1273. Published around 1866, when the railroad was pushing its track up through the mountains, it reflects the period's interest in both the engineering challenge and the wild scenery. The record's date and caption details come from an older card and have not been independently verified, but the picture still shows how the mountain landscape looked to travelers and builders of the time.
