French Lake, in Nevada County near Meadow Lake, survives here as one half of a stereographic pair, the only half the Library holds. It was issued in the Gems of California scenery series, and its caption ties the lake to the Donner Pass country, where the Central Pacific Railroad was climbing the Sierra Nevada in the mid-1860s. Viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, such cards gave parlor audiences a three-dimensional look at mountain scenery and the railroad's progress.
