Kidd's Dam Meadow, a lake near Summit City in the Sierra Nevada, is the focus of this half stereograph, one of a pair the Library holds only in part. Summit City sat near Donner Summit, where the Central Pacific Railroad was laying track over the Sierra in the mid-1860s, so the view captures a landscape that was about to change with the rail line. Stereographs like this were viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect and sold as scenic souvenirs. The 1866 date comes from an unverified caption card.
