The caption places this view on the Yuba River near Crystal Lake, along the Central Pacific Railroad's line in the Sierra Nevada, the route the company was pushing over Donner Pass in the mid-1860s. Albumen stereographs like this one were popular parlor and travel items in those years, and this card belongs to a numbered series titled *Gems of California Scenery*. The Library holds only one half of what was issued as a stereo pair, so the image reads as a flat view, but the surviving print still shows how photographers presented the railroad's mountain country to viewers far from it. The record's details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
