Crystal Lake House stood near Cisco, a Central Pacific Railroad station in the Sierra Nevada of northern California, so travelers could reach it by train. The picture is one half of a stereograph issued in the Gems of California Scenery series, a card meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Cisco was built along the railroad's climb toward the summit only a few years before this view was published around 1866, when the line was opening the high country to visitors.
