Hornet Hill Cut is a rock excavation near Gold Run, on the Central Pacific line as it climbed the Sierra Nevada toward Donner Pass. Published in 1866 as one half of a stereograph pair in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, the view shows the deep cuts that crews dug through the foothills with hand tools and black powder. The Central Pacific was building eastward from Sacramento at the time, and much of that labor was done by Chinese workers. Stereographs like this one were sold widely, so the picture also reflects how the railroad was presented to the public.
