Castle Peak, above the headwaters of the Yuba River in the Sierra Nevada, is the subject here, and the caption ties the scene to the Central Pacific Railroad's Donner Pass route. Issued around 1866 as part of the *Gems of California Scenery* series, the view dates from the years when the Central Pacific was building its line over the mountains, a project that brought engineers and photographers into this high country. The Library holds only one half of the original stereograph pair, so the image lacks its partner. The elevation and date come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
