The old dug-out at the foot of Donner Lake shows a rough shelter set into the ground in a place already known for the Donner Party, who were snowbound nearby during the winter of 1846-47. The Central Pacific later pushed its line through this mountain country in the mid-1860s, and such dug-outs gave crews a practical refuge from harsh weather. Only one half of this stereograph pair survives in the Library's holdings, from the Gems of California Scenery series. The 1866 date comes from an older caption card and has not been independently verified.
