Meadow Lake, Summit City, Knickerbocker Hill and Old Man Mountain are the named sites in this view, all tied to the Central Pacific Railroad's climb over the Sierra Nevada near Donner Pass. Summit City was a construction-era camp along that route, and the railroad's crews worked through this rugged country in the mid-1860s, cutting grades and tunnels through granite. Albumen stereographs like this one were sold in pairs and viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scenery a sense of depth. This print is only one half of its pair, so the record preserves just one side of the original view.
