Few Central Pacific depots in the Sierra Nevada were as closely tied to the line's mountain crossing as the one at Cisco, a stop on the Donner Pass route. Its name honors John J. Cisco, a New York banker who helped finance the railroad. The Central Pacific pushed its tracks over the Sierra in the early 1860s, and the work relied heavily on Chinese laborers who blasted tunnels and laid track through steep granite country. This view is only one half of a stereograph pair, issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, so the scene would have been seen in three dimensions through a stereoscope viewer. The record's publication date of 1866 is unverified.
