Among the railroad views on this board, this one shows a freight depot at Colfax, a Placer County stop on the Central Pacific line as it climbed toward Donner Pass. The town was renamed for Schuyler Colfax, a prominent national politician of the time, and the depot served the freight traffic that the railroad carried through the Sierra Nevada. The Library holds only one half of the stereograph pair, issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series as number 1249. The 1866 date and other details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
