Few stations on the Central Pacific line were as buried in snow as Cisco, a mountain depot in Placer County high in the Sierra Nevada, and this stereograph shows it in winter. Issued in 1866 as number 1253 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, it is only one half of a stereo pair, so the single print shows just one of the two views the viewer would have seen together. Crews on the Donner Pass route fought heavy snowfall with long snowsheds and constant clearing, and images like this one record how the railroad looked as it pushed across the mountains.
