Cisco, a mountain stop in Placer County, took its name from John J. Cisco, a New York banker who helped finance the Central Pacific, and this half of a stereograph shows its main street during the years when the railroad was being pushed up through the Sierra Nevada. Issued in the Gems of California series and dated 1866 in its record, the card was meant to be viewed alongside its companion image through a stereoscope, which gave parlor audiences a sense of depth. Only this single half survives here, and its caption details have been revised over time, so some specifics should be read with care.
