Emigrant Gap, a small station and rail siding on the Central Pacific line in the Sierra Nevada, is the setting for this view taken from inside a tunnel and looking west. The Central Pacific pushed its tracks over the Sierra toward Donner Pass in the mid-1860s, and tunnels like this one were cut by hand and blasting powder through granite, making the line one of the hardest engineering efforts of the transcontinental railroad. This half of a stereograph was issued as part of the Gems of California scenery series, so it was meant to be viewed through a stereo viewer for a sense of depth. Notice how the tunnel mouth frames the distant mountain light and the track running out ahead.
