This 1880 chromolithograph presents Buffalo as a bird's-eye panorama, a high vantage that lays the whole city out at once. Buffalo had grown quickly after the Erie Canal opened in 1825, becoming a major port and grain-handling hub at the eastern end of Lake Erie. The sheet was published by E.H. Hutchinson and is attributed to Maerz Lithographing Co., and like other chromolithographs of its era it was built from multiple stone impressions, each adding another color.
