Taken on September 5, 1901, the day before the shooting, this is the last portrait made of President William McKinley, who was in Buffalo to visit the Pan-American Exposition. On September 6, an anarchist named Leon Czolgosz fired on him at the fair's Temple of Music, and McKinley died eight days later. The print comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, and its caption gives the date and place that make it a somber marker in presidential history.
