Few fairs of the period brought visitors as close to foreign cultures as the Midway did at the Pan-American Exposition, and this view captures the crowded, carnival-like mood of its main lane. The exposition ran from May to November 1901 in Buffalo, and the Midway was its most popular strip, where replicas of distant villages and sideshow-style entertainments stood beside the fair's grander pavilions. The photoprint carries the copyright of C.D. Arnold and the number 467, and its date of about 1901 comes from the original caption card rather than independent verification.
