The subject here is an object rather than a view: the front and back covers of a passport issued to photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston for the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. The fair ran from May to November 1901 and was meant to showcase trade and ties across the Western Hemisphere, with its illuminated Electric Tower as the centerpiece. Its history is shadowed by the assassination of President William McKinley on the grounds in September 1901. Johnston's credentials suggest the fair's staff and visitors were treated as a documentary subject, and the cover itself shows how such admission papers were designed.
