Crowds gather outside a Buffalo newspaper office to read posted bulletins on President William McKinley's condition, the night he died there in September 1901. McKinley had been shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo on September 6, and he died eight days later, on September 14, at the Milburn House, the home of a local industrialist where he had been taken for care. Stereograph cards like this one were sold in large numbers in the early 1900s, so the image shows both a moment of national anxiety and the commercial appetite for news views of the event.
