Curtis recorded this Cheyenne Buffalo Society animal dance around 1927, when his multi-volume survey of Native American life was nearing its end. The society's connection to the bison, the animal at the center of Plains life, shapes the dancers' costume and movement, and the record ties the scene to Cheyenne spiritual practice. It appears on page 124 of volume 19 of *The North American Indian*, where Curtis presented ceremony for a largely non-Native audience. Many of his scenes were posed or reconstructed, so the picture is best read as a crafted record as well as a document.
